Why shouldn't dogs drink ocean water?

Salt water can be dangerous for dogs, and it can even be deadly. When a dog drinks salt water, the excess salt draws water from the blood into the intestines, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. It also disrupts the fluid balance in your dog.

What happens if your dog drinks too much salt water?

When too much salt builds up in a dog’s body, their cells release their water content to try and balance out the sodium disparity. This, in turn, causes a litany of serious health effects. It can cause seizures, a loss of brain cells, injury to the kidneys, and severe dehydration.

If a dog with saltwater poisoning isn’t treated medically, the condition can easily lead to death. To restore your dog’s water and electrolyte balance to normal levels you or your vet need spend the next 2-3 days flushing the excess salt out of your dog’s body.

So did Mr Jay drink too much salt water?

Mr Jay had never seen the sea before and was SO excited when arrived and opened the van door for him! He bolted down the enbankment and unlike I've never seen him do before, he just happily RAN. The sand must have felt great under his feet and his webbed toes gave him great traction!

He was terrified of the waves so never went into the actual sea, but he throughly enjoyed bouncing around the calmer shallow pools...

He did drink a too much salty sea water... It's hard to stop a dog from drinking it... they don't understand why you are saying "NO!"... So lets just say that his stomach and bowels were totally empty before we got back in the van, many many hours later. YUCK! But thankfully after a day of forcing LOTS of fresh water in him, he was back to his normal rambuncious self.

If you'd like to help support Mr Jay's recovery, his 2nd CCL surgery on his left knee or the Romanian and UK charities that helped save his life, donations would be greatfully recieved here on our JustGiving page:
