Dashain is the biggest and most widely celebrated festival in Nepal, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Lasting 15 days, it typically falls in September or October, corresponding to the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin. The festival is rooted in Hindu mythology, celebrating the goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. It also honors the epic battle of Ramayana, where Lord Ram defeated the demon king Ravana.

The festival brings together families, as many Nepalis living abroad or in cities return to their villages to celebrate. Dashain is marked by various rituals, including the worship of different forms of the goddess Durga, animal sacrifices, and offerings of blessings. The most important days are Ghatasthapana, Phulpati, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijaya Dashami, where elders apply tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermilion) and jamara (barley sprouts) on younger members, symbolizing blessings.

Kites flying, swings (ping), and purchasing new clothes are traditional highlights of the festival, making it a joyful time for both children and adults. It is also a time for feasts, with families gathering to enjoy festive foods, especially meat delicacies, making Dashain a vibrant cultural celebration.
