It’s March now - and this is the time of year when many people haven’t just given up on their New Year’s resolutions - they’ve completely forgotten about them. I made a resolution at the beginning of 2023 to read 50 books. This was because in 2022 I read about 25 books. My idea was that if I read 25 books - and gained a lot from those - if I could read 50 books - I could gain twice as much and grow twice as much, enjoy twice as much.

Here’s why that thinking is flawed. At the end of 2022 I was looking at social media - as one does - and all sorts of people I followed were putting out lists and photographs and reading challenges they had completed during the year. Some of them had read more than me. Some had read literally hundreds of books. I began to feel like I needed to catch up - as if someone can really fall behind in reading as if we are still in high school!

So I set this goal for myself… A few weeks into this project - I heard someone say that it was probably better to just read the same books over and over and to really absorb them than to try to read more books. He said that even forcing yourself to finish a book you’re not that into is basically a pose - so you can go to social media and say “here are all the books I read”. This really spoke to me.
