Chair 1 (Miner's Basin) was originally part of the two-lift route to the summit, with Iceberg Ridge starting where this lift unloaded at. It was a Riblet double installed in 1962, and it and Iceberg Ridge were Crystal Mountain's first chairlifts. In 1970, Chair 5 (Campbell Basin) was installed, providing direct access to Campbell Basin, and a load of new trails. Nothing changed for Miner's Basin, but the lift and the other out of base lifts including Chair 4 (Quicksilver), Chair 5 (Campbell Basin), Chair 7 (Gold Hills), and Chair 8 (Discovery) required hiking. This and out of base capacity needs warranted construction of two new lift, each following similar routes to Chair 1 and Chair 2. In 1988, Chair 5 was shortened to its midstation, and its lower half was replaced with Midway Shuttle, starting lower than Chair 1 and Chair 5's old bottom terminal. The lift that followed Chair 2's alignment was Rainier Express, also installed in 1988, the first high speed lift at Crystal Mountain. Both lifts were manufactured by Poma. Rainier Express completely replaced Chair 2, starting lower than that lift, and having its top terminal sit directly where Chair 2's terminal was on the summit. Chair 1, however, remained in place and ran occasionally when crowds should require additional out of base capacity. 10 years later, after Crystal Mountain's second high speed lift, a third was installed, directly replacing Midway Shuttle on the same alignment. This lift, called Chinook Express, now provided not only the first leg of the journey to the summit, but also the first leg of the journey to Campbell Basin, and the summit of the entire resort, Silver Queen.

Chinook is a Doppelmayr high speed six pack. It is the seventh high speed six Doppelmayr has ever installed in North America, after the other 4 spacejet model and 2 UNI model six-packs. Crystal Mountain Resort is also the second ski resort in North America to have more than one six pack, after Park City. After Chinook's install, Miner's Basin practically stopped running, and sat mostly idle until its removal in 2012, two years after Mt. Rainier Gondola was built. It's old lift line can still be seen to this day when riding up the gondola. The trails Deer Fly and Lower Ferk's became very difficult to reach, but after a trail called Cutover was added, one can now ski the majority of those trail's lengths directly of Chinook Express.
