Shinigami was caught by the Hashiras of him communicating with the Uppermoons which was a misunderstanding. He waited for Kagaya to arrive but then the Serpent Hashira went ahead to interrogate him. Shinigami refused to cooperate with Obanai and told him that questions will be answered once Kagaya arrives.

But Obanai became annoyed and threw insults at him until he said something that he shouldn't have which made Shinigami enraged and feared the Hashiras with his demon form.
