Batuan Temple is the most famous and beautiful village temple designed in Balinese architecture with split gates, stone guardian spirits, thatched shrines and amazing carvings. There are three temples dedicated to the Trimurtis in this village. Over a thousand years old, this temple, Pura Pushe Batuan, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, while the other two temples are dedicated to Shiva and Brahma. . When entering temples in Bali, men and women must wear a sarong or scarf to cover bare knees and shoulders. Those who are bleeding due to menstruation or wounds are not allowed in the temples. Entry is also prohibited for women who have given birth within six weeks.
Entering the temple grounds through an intricately carved stone gate called the "Kandi Bentar", you will find pavilions and shrines adorned with carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The central courtyard is the main shrine dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, the protector of Hinduism. Intricate sculptures and elaborate offerings adorn the shrine. Like any temple in Bali, Batuan Temple is divided into three areas: the outer temple area, the middle area and the main temple area. This courtyard has a high entrance known as Kori Agung, surrounded by several giant guardian statues. It is believed that gods enter and exit through this door. Next to this door are two smaller doors for people to enter the main courtyard of the temple. In the courtyard of the temple there is a long building called Bale Agung and Bale Kulkul. Another three-storied building symbolizing the Besakih Temple, the largest and holiest in Bali, can also be found here. There is also a building called Padmasanam, which is the shrine of Sang Hyang Vidhi, the sole deity of the Balinese Hindus. The 1000 year old Batuan Temple has been mentioned in many historical records. The influence of Hinduism from India is evident in the carvings here. Dwarpala statue, statue of embodiment, statue of animals, statues of lingas and demons and many other ancient and unique statues will amaze you. The roofs of the main temples are made of black palm fibre.
The locals are very concerned about the upkeep and preservation of the temple architecture and environment. Not all the existing buildings are old buildings, some of them have been renovated and altered from the 10th century to the 18th century. Serving as a focal point for community gatherings, religious ceremonies and cultural events, the Batuan Temple is a temple of great cultural and religious importance to the Balinese people.
