Symphony No. 6, “Little C Major”
I. Adagio – Allegro – Più moto
II. Andante
III. Scherzo: Presto; Trio: Più lento
IV. Allegro moderato
A prolific composer of the late Classical period, Franz Schubert completed this symphony in 1818. However, it was not performed until after his death. Despite its typical symphonic structure, the slow movement is surprisingly bombastic in the middle section. A fun scherzo draws parallels to Beethoven. The moniker “Little C major” differentiates the symphony from his later Symphony No. 9, nicknamed the “Great C Major.” But the symphony is still full of energy and grandeur, alongside cheerful and lighthearted passages.
