In feudal Georgia lived a rich governor with his wife and small son. During the great revolt of the princes in the dukedom, the governor was murdered. His wife flees in panic and abandons their little son. Grusha, a kitchen maid, rescues the boy and desperately makes her way with him to the mountains to find refuge there. At the end of the war, soldiers appear and kidnap the child from Grusha according to a court order. The mother of the child asks to receive him into her hands so that she can hold on to her dead husband's estate. Grusha and the mother are called to appear before the judge Azedek who will decide who the child belongs to
