In this video, I show you how to achieve the look of HGTV's Fixer Upper shiplap or nickel gap wall plank for much less money using plywood. It's basically a Shiplap Hack to imitate the Fixer Upper style as an awesome wall plank accent wall.

This week I want to talk to you about a project that I have been working on for a little while and still haven’t completely finished up. Not that it is hard project or anything, but I have just had some other priorities. While I was turning my garage into a workshop, I decided to do one wall as a shiplap wall. In my case, I already knew that I was going to be using plywood, because I had a surplus of it, but this video is basically about why shiplap isn’t necessarily worth the money and you can achieve the same results for a lot less.

Shiplap has obviously been made popular by Chip & Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper. It’s a great look but if you are starting from scratch, you may not want to skip the shiplap altogether. Shiplap is great if you pull down sheetrock and it is underneath, but in order to go to the store and buy shiplap, it’s a lot more expensive than some other options that can give you the same look.

Nickel gap is very similar to Shiplap, although the boards don’t overlap it still gives you that desirable shadow line. The look is very similar, but we could even go a step further and use plywood to achieve the same look at a significantly lower cost.

At the end of this video I show the cost break down on the different types of options and even include a link in the description to calculate your own shiplap cost versus doing it with plywood.

Make sure you subscribe to my channel to see the completed project, but I guarantee the look will be very comparable to shiplap, with a ton of extra money in your pocket for other projects.
