Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia is most famous as one of the sites where George Lucas shot the original Star Wars films in the 1970s. However, it is also full of ksour: fortified granaries built by the local tribes between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries. Join me as I drive the 50km "Maztouria Loop" to the south-east of Tataouine and explore nine of the ksour of Jebel Abiadh (the White Mountains).

Some ksour are on mountains, some are on hilltops, a few are even on valley floors. Most are now abandoned, with a few being destroyed by French colonial forces due to local resistance to French rule. However, some of these incredible buildings have either been restored as historical sites, sites of pilgrimage for Star Wars fans or are in current use as housing, market places or even tourist accommodation!
