Today, Norman Lear and his shows are famous — or infamous, depending on who you ask. But in 1971, he was an obscure TV writer and producer. A college dropout and former Nazi hunter, Norman turned to comedy after World War II. And after years of writing jokes for some of the most famous comics on television, Norman decided it was time to for a show of his own. He tackled topics that other shows were afraid to go near — from sex to religion to homosexuality.
