Did You Know Potatoes Produce Poisonous Berries? | What Is Potato Fruit? | Guten Yardening
Sometimes the potato plants you grow produce little green berries on top. As you might expect, since potatoes are part of the nightshade family, these potato berries are part of the plant that you cant eat. The berries are filled with a glycoalkaloid called solanine. (The same solanine that makes potatoes exposed to the sun turn green).
Though the berry looks like an unripe tomato, the solanine levels inside make it inedible and the berry can actually poison someone who tries to eat it. However, inside those little berries are something very exciting.
While we usually grow potatoes from seed potatoes to ensure that the next generation of potatoes is true to the parent plant, it is also possible to grow potatoes from the true potato seeds inside of these potato berries.
In this video, we talk about everything you should know about potato berries, and some of the reasons why we don't grow potatoes from true potato seeds.
We hope you enjoy this video and learn something new from it.
Thanks for watching.
