„Luka“ by Suzanne Vega is a song about child abuse. But the lyrics in my opinion can apply to all kinds of domestic violence. I’ve recently spend a week in a women’s shelter as a journalist. What the women told me, reminded me of this song: They said, that for a long time they felt shame. They thought they themselves were to blame. They told me that they tried not to be too proud, not to be too loud, because they didn‘t want to provoke him. I thought of them, when I was singing this. They‘ve managed to leave. I hope more women will.
