I've been trying to make a fruit thinning video for years, and something always happens that stops me β€” usually it's the weather, but in previous years it was the vineyard that took precedence this time of year. At any rate, I finally got to make my fruit thinning video for apple trees 🍎😊

There are numerous reason to fruit thin an apple tree, but here are the most obvious:

1) Weight - Extra apples can break branches with their weight
2) Touching apples are an entry point for coddling moths
3) Touching apples are an entry point for wasps
4) Touching apples create a place where rot begins
5) Extra apples use a lot of resources, and all apples will be sub-grade
6) Extra apples will self-prune and rot on the ground attracting pests
7) Extra apples is a biennial phenomena that if let alone, and will cause the tree to over produce one year, then underproduce the next. Thinning stops that, but generally only if done within 4 to 5 weeks of flowering.

Although the timing of fruit thinning is important if you want to stop overproduction, it should be done any time you can get in there β€” even late in the summer. It is always a good time to thin crowded fruit!
