In 1833, Thomas Maslen, an Indian colonialist faced two known facts - 1. The inland of Australia was unknown. 2. There were rivers going westward, away from the sea. The conclusions he drew from these two seemingly unrelated pieces of information are fascinating, and worthy of discussion.
If you feel like reading Thomas Maslen's book yourself, the whole resource is available online! Though be warned, it's 481 pages long. The Victorians were never famed for their brevity!
