Brooklyn native, Stanley Stellar, has become a legend in photography, always having an interest in the medium and a natural, unique approach to eroticism. Stellar used his camera to capture fleeting moments of intimacy but also as a tool to document the rough times lived by the LGBTQ+ community back in the ‘80s in New York when homosexuality was illegal and the scourging of AIDS marked many individuals. His visual culture of men, depth, and humanity in his photographs are still present today, making him one of the photographers of the early period of gay liberation, with his images becoming icons of that history. Stanley Stellar welcomes ODDA into his studio in Manhattan to talk us through his personal journey and the harsh realities and stories portrayed in his work.
