The First Signs of Trouble: Criticizing Tarantino
The first signs of trouble came last year when Jackson openly criticized Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Jackson, a long-time collaborator of Tarantino, wasn’t shy about expressing his disappointment in the film's lack of diversity. In an interview with Vulture, Jackson made it clear that he wasn’t pleased with the absence of Black actors in a movie set in 1960s Los Angeles, a city known for its diverse population. Jackson compared his experience watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to watching Goodfellas, noting how few Black faces were visible in both films. He remarked, “How many Black people are in that movie? Maybe three. It was kind of like watching Goodfellas... It’s like me and somebody else.” For someone like Jackson, who has appeared in Tarantino classics like Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Django Unchained, his absence from this particular film raised eyebrows. When asked if he had discussed the issue with Tarantino, Jackson revealed that he hadn’t, adding that their only interaction since the film’s release was at the Oscars, where discussing the movie wasn’t on the table.
