Part 11: Today, the 1991 Chevy OBS project truck gets a new fuel pump capable of supplying fuel to the 5.3 that will be going in soon. I selected an ACDelco EP381 pump that is rated at 155 lpm and 60 psi. This would be a good replacement pump for the 96+ Vortec trucks. This will work just fine for a stock or mildly modified LS engine. Installation is straight forward with no surprises. When you go to the trouble of removing your trucks bed, it’s a good time to do your suspension work and fuel pump. There is just no easy way to remove the pump and do the work I did, with the bed in place. It makes working with the fuel tank and lines so much easier. Speaking of fuel lines, you have many choices. If you have the budget, the AN- fittings are nice…but pricey. I like the idea of using as much of the factory parts as possible. It makes for a very clean and stock installation.

Several key takeaways:
1) A floor jack really helps to adjust the height of the rear of the truck allowing more space underneath for the tank to slide out easier,
2) Try to get as much fuel out of the tank as possible BEFORE handling the tank. Several gallons of fuel sloshing around in the tank when you are trying to remove it by yourself does not help you out!
3) When I place the modified fuel lines back in place below the truck, I went ahead and put a new fuel filter on.
4) DO NOT put the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank BEFORE trying to install the tank. You will mess something up.
5) The fuel pump kit came with 2 different rubber O rings to use for installing the new pump in the tank. You will only use 1.
