Ingredients:
For the Dough (makes 1 large or 2 medium pizzas):
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup warm water (110°F)
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
For the Sauce:
1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
Pinch of sugar (optional)
Toppings (customizable):
Fresh mozzarella cheese or shredded mozzarella
Fresh basil leaves
Pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, peppers, or any favorite toppings
Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast activates (it should become foamy).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 7-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if it's too sticky.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-2 hours in a warm place until doubled in size.
2. Make the Sauce:
In a small saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes to thicken slightly. Adjust seasoning and add sugar if desired. Let cool.
3. Assemble the Pizza:
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
Punch down the dough and divide it into two if making two pizzas. Roll it out on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
Transfer the rolled dough to a pizza peel (or baking sheet) lightly dusted with flour or cornmeal.
Spread a thin layer of the prepared sauce over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
Add toppings: start with mozzarella, then layer on your favorites like pepperoni, veggies, or fresh basil.
4. Bake the Pizza:
Slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone (or bake directly on the baking sheet) and bake for 10-15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
Remove from the oven, add fresh basil (if you haven’t already), and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
Let the pizza cool slightly before slicing, and enjoy!
