Thanks to Matt from Savage Flies for sharing the Smoky Mountain Stimulator Dry Fly pattern. You can find Matt here on Youtube at    / savageflies   or visit his website http://www.savageflies.com

The Stimulator fly pattern is generally recognized as a Randall Kaufmann creation. He tied the pattern commercially in the 80s and it gained a lot of popularity into the new millennium. The pattern is also credited to tyer Jim Slattery who had originally called his fly a Fluttering Stonefly. Another contender for the genesis of the fly is Pat Barnes Sofa Pillow fly pattern first tied in the 1940s.

The Stimulator is a big bushy dry fly that is ideal for imitating a number of large aquatic bugs like the adult stonefly, alder fly, caddis, or terrestrials like large beetles, hoppers, and cicada. The large size makes the fly suitable for multiple fly set-ups like a hopper dropper rigging.

You can dress the pattern in a number of color variations using yellow, orange, olive, brown and peacock body colors. Vary the size to match target prey species.
