Gold glass is made by sealing gold foil between two layers of glass. In the late 1500s, circular gold glass plaques were found inset into the walls of subterranean tombs of ancient Rome. The subject matter of the pieces varied and included biblical and Jewish iconography, mythological figures, and portraits. Watch a demonstration of this method in this video featuring footage from the Corning Museum of Glass.
