WRENCH ADVENTURES with Marvin L. Jones
Ford Senior Master Tech, Marvin L. Jones, talks about why there is a massive shortage of certified automotive technicians at dealerships now.
"The simple answer is money. There is an expectation that many tasks are done for almost free by the auto tech at the dealership, just because the job is WARRANTY WORK!
A job flagged to take 10 hours to perform for example, should take the average certified tech, 10 hours to complete. Now that same 10 hour job if done under the new car warranty may only pay the auto tech 2 hours for a 10 hour job.
So because the manufacturer of the vehicle has a parts defect or improper assembly causing an issue with the new car, the manufacturer as well as the dealer puts that burden on the blue collar worker trying to make a living.
That's it! That's your answer. Do you want to work for free?
When you call your HVAC tech out to the house to find out why your air conditioner is not blowing cold anymore, you pay a service call up front. You are told the problem, and pay for the service call even if the air conditioner is not repaired. You paid that HVAC service tech for their time to find out what the problem was. They can then give you an estimate on the parts and labor to repair your air condition.
HOWEVER...with cars and trucks the customer is shocked to have to pay for your time to find out what the issue is with their vehicle. How many times have techs heard...$135 to put it on the computer and you didn't even fix it!
SO GUESS WHAT? ... Life is too short for that day after day. Automotive technicians are leaving the industry in mass.
So to close, the dealership either wants you to work for pennies on the dollar, or customers want you to find out their automotive problem for them for free.
