This bike is the Norton P11 Ranger

For those of you who don’t know this model of bike, it is a race bred sports roadster. It has a 745cc Atlas engine with a tank that holds 2.5 UK or 2.7 US Gallons.

They where often ridden off road which brings us to this particular bike we recently got in to Andover Classic Motorcycle Workshop.

We got this bike in a few months ago for a service.

We started working on the bike and found some issues with the forks not fitting the frame correctly, however, on further investigation we where looking at the front of the bike and noticed everything was totally bent. We couldn’t be certain but the bike had been bought from overseas and looked like it had been taken off road, hit something fairly substantial and been put back together again bent.

This meant the bike needed stripping completely and then the frame was sent away too competition fabrications who took the frame apart and essentially put it back together again straight.

Once we got the frame back we could start to re-build the bike and everything that goes with it. Sadly this was the bike that kept on giving, so when we began this process we found multiple extra work to be completed. We found the gearbox had a fault due to alignment issues which had damaged the main and layshafts, it had also caused problems with the sleeve gear and bearings. The main shaft itself was the wrong length and so all this had to be check and replaced where it was needed.

We made shims for the engine cradle and also found the belt drive clutch system didn’t fit correctly with the original shafts so we replaced this with the original type clutch and primary gearing.

We also found numerous wiring faults which we corrected and also found the rear wheel spacer was a mis match and so we machined these and replaced them to make the bike safe again.

It’s now a stunning machine, that’s not to say there’s not more work to be done in the future, but, now it’s a safe, ready to be ridden and loved again.
