Maui’s abundance of roosters and hens is primarily due to a combination of historical and environmental factors:

Polynesian Introduction: Chickens were originally brought to Hawaii by Polynesian settlers as a food source.  

Hurricane Impact: Hurricanes Iniki (1992) and Iwa (1982) caused widespread destruction, freeing many chickens from their enclosures.

Lack of Natural Predators: Hawaii’s isolated ecosystem doesn’t have many natural predators for chickens, allowing their population to thrive.
