VSVs or Vacuum Solenoid Valves are an electrical component commonly used to allow the vacuum from the intake manifold to flow to an actuator, it may be an EGR valve or the EVAP system.

They have become more and more common since Electronic Fuel Injection was introduced, as they allow the ECU control of these systems. They sort of operate a little like a relay does for electricity, but this time the 'consumer' circuit has vacuum switched using an internal valve.

This video covers a basic introduction to these units and how to test them. If you have resistance specifications for the internal windings then it's a good idea to check these too...

These units are generally quite reliable, however, it's important to test them thoroughly to ensure it doesn't need replacing.
