In this India travel vlog, I take you through one of our days at yoga school in Rishikesh, India for the 200YTT (200. hour yoga teacher training). We start by waking up really early as our first class (hatha yoga) starts at 6am. I ran up to the rooftop yoga studio in the dark and everyday we could watch the sunrise as we do our yoga class. After hatha yoga we have a quick 15 minute break before our pranayama class (breathing). After both of those classes it's time for breakfast! Everyday we get an amazing vegetarian breakfast at yoga school. After breakfast there are 2 more classes: yoga anatomy and adjustment & alignment. Then next we have an amazing vegetarian lunch buffet!
On 'normal' days we would have a 45 minute break after lunch, then two more classes: yoga philosophy and meditation. However, today was a special day and we got the afternoon off to go to the Ganga Aarti Ceremony! The Ganga River (in English the Ganges) is the holiest river in all of India. Every evening in Rishikesh they have a ceremony (Ganga Aarti) alone the river to thank the goddess.
Everyone from yoga school walked down to the main road in Rishikesh before climbing into auto rickshaws and heading from Tapovan to Triveni Ghat to see our first Ganga Aarti. It was such a big deal! There were so many people selling flowers to give to the river, as well as big orange containers that you could fill with the holy water from the Ganges and take it home with you. We even saw people bathing in the holy water - in January! Cold!!
We arrived to the ceremony tent early to get good seats. First you had to check your shoes, then you could enter. We watched them getting ready before sunset. Once the sunset they performed with incense and fire along the banks of the river. Once the ceremony finished, we were able to go down toward the Ganges where we tried our first Prasad (the white sugar balls we ate).
After the ceremony ended, everyone started a huge dancing afterparty! It was so much fun to watch and join in with everyone celebrating next to the Ganges River! If you're in Rishikesh, you MUST try to see the Ganga Aarti Ceremony!
