Many of our consumer decisions on what we buy are not actually from choices we make on our own, but they are from various marketing tactics that trick us into spending money. In this video, I share 10 of the tactics, or consumerism trends, that manipulate us into spending more money.

1. Target Advertising

Back in the day, advertising was very innocent where you would see an advertisement on a billboard. More recently, however, advertising has gotten much more creepy where it can now see you and target specific advertisements to you. Big tech companies provide free products to people in order to collect data on you so they can target specific ads to you.

2. All Access Advertising

In the past, advertising was very limited where the only places you would see advertising were outside the house and on the TV and radio. Now, however, there are no limits to where you can see advertising due to smartphones, Alexas, and various other tech items. This increased exposure to advertising is causing people to spend more.

3. Bot Reviews

A huge thing that influences our decision to buy something is opinions from other people because we trust other people's views. The internet has manipulated this trust and many products on amazon and other websites have reviews that were written by bots to convince you to buy a product. And people often buy products because they believe these reviews are real.

4. Secret Sponsored Content

Sponsored content is when an advertiser will pay a publisher or creator to promote a product or service. There are two types of sponsored content: the first is very obvious where you know it is an advertisement. The other, however, is less obvious where it seems like an article or review, but is actually an advertisement. People often see this secret sponsored content and are influenced into buying something.

5. Polarized Marketing

Another way companies will try to get you to buy a product is through capitalizing on a polarizing topic. For example, Hershey's created an advertisement on woman's day with a trans woman and the Daily Wire came back at it promoting their own chocolate brand. Many people who were against Hershey's statement bought the other product simply in spite of Hershey's.

6. The Subscription Economy

In recent years, we have transitioned to an ownership model where you pay a one time fee to own something to a subscription based model where you pay a monthly fee to use a service. This is causing people to continually pay for things and never reach ownership.

7. Temu/Shein

Temu and Shein are companies that sell low quality products at low prices. They manipulate people into buying products through various marketing tactics like low prices, crazy sales, and gamification.

8. Buy Now, Pay Later

When given the option to buy something with money they don't have, many people will take it. Buy now, pay later apps like afterpay, affirm, and Apple pay later get people to spend money they don't have digging them in a deeper financial hole.

9. Sports Betting

In 2018, the US Supreme Court legalized sport betting apps. This allowed people to place bets with real money at any time with the click of a button, which is causing many people to become addicted to gambling.

10. Dopamine Overload

To summarize this video, a huge thing that is causing people to spend more money is this dopamine overload world that we're living in. It is important to step away from the abundance in the world in order to not be manipulated by it.
