Today, Saving Private Ryan is considered one of the greatest of all war films, and, to some, one of the greatest films ever made. If you were to ask me if Saving Private Ryan is an excellent film I would say: absolutely. However, after giving the film a recent rewatch… I have some feelings. I’ve seen the film countless times over the years and despite having admired it a great deal, there was always something off about it that I couldn’t put my finger on. That is until now.

Let me be clear, I am not saying it is a bad film. On the contrary, I would argue that Saving Private Ryan is such an incredible feat of filmmaking brilliance… that it conceals the fact that thematically, it is a bit of a clusterf*ck.
