Mahavatar Baba Ji, first in the line of Yogoda Gurus, revered by millions of devotees as initiator of Kriya Yoga for this age. The first mention about Mahavatar Baba Ji comes in the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda Ji, the founder of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India/Self Realization Fellowship (www.yssofindia.org), invisibly helping the world for its spiritual redemption. This musical rendition is a humble offering to the great Avatar on the occasion of 25th July, celebrated as Smriti Divas by his disciples all over the world.

बद्रीनाथ के आसपास के उत्तरी हिमालय के पहाड़ आज भी लाहिड़ी महाशय के गुरु बाबाजी की जीवंत उपस्थिति से पावन हो रहे हैं। भारत में बाबाजी का कार्य रहा है जिन विशेष कार्यों के लिए अवतार इस जगत में आते हैं, उन कार्यों की पूर्ति में उनकी सहायता करना। इस प्रकार शास्त्रीय वर्गीकरण के अनुसार वे एक महावतार हैं। इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं कि इतिहास में बाबाजी का कहीं कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। किसी भी शताब्दी में बाबाजी कभी जनसाधारण के सामने प्रकट नहीं हुए। उनकी युग-युगान्तर की योजनाओं में गलत अर्थ लगाने वाली प्रसिद्धि की चकाचौंध के लिये कोई स्थान नहीं है। सृष्टि में एकमात्र शक्ति होते हुए भी चुपचाप अपना काम करते रहने वाले स्रष्टा की तरह ही बाबाजी भी विनम्र गुमनामी में अपना कार्य करते रहते हैं। बाबाजी के परिवार या जन्मस्थान के विषय में कभी किसी को कुछ पता नहीं चल पाया। इस मामले में इतिहास लेखकों को निराश ही होना पड़ेगा।

लाहिड़ी महाशय कहा करते थे: ‘‘जब भी कोई श्रद्धा के साथ बाबाजी का नाम लेता है, उसे तत्क्षण आध्यात्मिक आशीर्वाद प्राप्त होता है।’’

अमर बाबाजी के शरीर पर आयु का कोई लक्षण दृष्टिगोचर नहीं होता। वे अधिक से अधिक पच्चीस वर्ष के युवक दिखते हैं। गौरवर्ण, मध्यम कद-काठी के बाबाजी के सुन्दर, बलिष्ठ शरीर पर सहज ही दिख पड़ने योग्य तेज है। नेत्र काले, शान्त और दयार्द्र हैं। उनके लम्बे चमकीले केश ताम्रवर्ण के हैं।

The Northern Himalayan crags near Badrinarayan are still blessed by the living presence of Babaji, the Guru of Lahiri Mahasaya. The secluded master has retained his physical form for centuries, perhaps for millenniums. The deathless Babaji is an avatar.
Babaji's mission in India has been to assist prophets in carrying out their special dispensations. He thus qualifies for the scriptural classification of Mahavatar (Great Avatar).
That there is no historical reference to Babaji need not surprise us. The great guru has never openly appeared in any century; the misinterpreting glare of publicity has no place in his millennial plans. Like the Creator, the sole but silent Power, Babaji works in humble obscurity.
"Whenever anyone utters with reverence the name of Babaji," Lahiri Mahasaya said, "that devotee attracts an instant spiritual blessing."
The deathless guru bears no mark of age on his body; he appears to be a youth of not more than twenty-five. Fair-skinned, of medium build and height, Babaji's beautiful, strong body radiates a perceptible glow. His eyes are dark, calm, and tender; his long, lustrous hair is copper-colored.
