The Soo Locks are composed of two canals and four locks, permitting vessels of numerous types and sizes to navigate the 21-foot drop in the St. Mary's River safely. These locks allow for the passage of commercial, recreational, and military vessels between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, playing a vital role in the Great Lakes Navigation System. By bridging the 23-foot elevation gap between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, the Soo Locks enable freighters, tugboats, Coast Guard boats, and other vessels to access Lake Superior. The lock opened in 1968 measures 1,200 by 110 by 50 feet. The Soo Locks remain highly active, ranking among the busiest locks globally.
