British Airways Flight 009, known as Speedbird 9, faced disaster when its weather radar failed to detect a dry ash cloud. Losing four engines, the crew successfully restarted them with remaining electrical power, averting catastrophe.

Air Canada 797: In June of 1983, a small mechanical problem at the back of an Air Canada DC-9 quickly turns into an all-out emergency 10 kilometers in the air. Twenty-three people die and the cause of the deadly fire can never be completely identified. However, a comprehensive series of changes are recommended as a result of the tragedy.
