Many a time when students first start college, their academic performance is not quite as per their expectations. A number of factors exist behind this.

In this video, I discuss how students can take stock of their situation and overcome their academic agonies.

Students need to judge for themselves whether they are involved in too many extra-curricular activities.

They must also remember that the saying "Life is set" after joining college does not give them a license to relax. Rather, it is a chance for them to exert their efforts in a focused manner to make the best of the opportunities that their colleges provide to carve out a career for themselves to their liking. Students must realize that when it was so tough to even enter these colleges, how much more difficult it would be actually excel here.

Students also have to contend with bad or uninspired teaching. The only way out is to be a professional about it and not to think too much about being inspired. Rather they should just "turn up" for work and do what needs to be done.

A major difference between college and coaching days is that in college there are no mock tests. Each test is a real one and counts towards the student's grade point average. However, a redeeming factor is that if the students can maintain track with the professors' teaching, it is not very hard to have a preparation. The reason is that while the content of the study material is advanced, the application in problems is often not that high - at least not as high as JEE Advanced. So, with some careful preparation it is possible to perform well academically.

There is an enormous number and breadth of subjects. Furthermore, many of the subjects build upon one another. However, again the students should not lose hope if they have not been able to perform well in some subjects. Among the many subjects, there is a significant number which are quite mutually exclusive from one another. So, even if the student's preparation in certain subjects has not been very good, it is still possible to do well in some other subjects.

Overall, the message here is that students should not feel despondent, they should not lose hope, and they should keep up their efforts!
