The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model. Developed initially by educators, and refined in partnership with FranklinCovey, it empowers children and youth with leadership and life skills necessary to succeed in the 21st Century. The Leader in Me is centered on the idea that every child contains unique abilities and has the capacity to be a leader. It is based on secular principles of personal, interpersonal, and organizational effectiveness.

The Leader in Me integrates leadership, social-emotional learning, quality, and educational models and processes from past and current thought leaders including The 4 Imperatives of Great Leaders and The 4 Disciplines of Execution. The model includes student participation in goal setting, data tracking, leadership roles, Student-Led Conferences, leadership environments, and Leadership Events.

Do you have student leaders in your classroom?

You’ll love this video of a student leader who shares her thoughts on leadership and how The Leader in Me has empowered her and other students at her school to be leaders and benefit their school and community.

Here are some of her thoughts on student leadership:

• Everyone is a leader.
• Students can help each other discover “the leader within.”
• To be a leader you need to show a “heart of service.”
• Leaders persevere through challenges.
• When leaders see a problem, they try to solve it.

She also shared things the student leader team at her school has done to serve and engage their community and school.

• Participated in a breast cancer awareness walk.
• Raised money for breast cancer survivors.
• Planned monthly school events.
• Organized and did a non-gun violence walk to honor students who have been killed in school shootings.
• Participated in a power walk with their teachers to learn about healthy activities.

Meiling Parish gave this speech at a Leader in Me Symposium event. Every year more than 8,000 educators participate in The Leader in Me Symposium series. They come together to listen to students, industry thought leaders, and each other about transforming paradigms in education and empowering elementary and middle school students to model 21st-century leadership and life skills.
