Found lying under a tree, caked in mud, emaciated, and totally unresponsive, when we first met Musiara, we knew we had a fight on our hands to save him.

But miracles do happen.

After weeks where it seemed touch-and-go, eventually Musiara turned a corner. Nowadays, he seems to prefer the company of the girls at the Nursery, particularly Mbegu and Maramoja, but has fit in seamlessly with all of our orphan herd and is thriving.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity.
