Of all the places I visited this past summer, the prairies of Kansas were easily the most underrated destination. Looking out on the horizon and seeing a vast expanse of soft rolling hills has a real magical quality to it. I found solitude here that I find in few other ecosystems. When people come to the Midwest, they think they see a whole lot of nothing. On the contrary, the ecology here has more going on than you might expect.
