Antigua is a small town surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It's known for Spanish colonial buildings, many of which were restored after an earthquake in 1773 that ended Antigua's 200-year reign as Guatemala's colonial capital. The most notable architectural examples include the baroque La Merced church, a low-rise, yellow-and-white church that participates in the city's famous Semana Santa, a week of parades and rituals.
