We've released a limited quantity of 1-year-old bare root Japanese Black Pines bundles for sale. If you're considering order any or if you have any bare root of your own, Eric offers these tips on how to care for and style bare root 1 year-old JBP.

Bare root plants are dormant (not actively growing) plants that are dug up and stored without any soil around their roots. Once you place the plant in a container with bonsai soil and add moisture, it will start to grow again.

00:00:30 We grow in a greenhouse, which we find generates more vigorous seedlings in the first year of growth (for Northern California).

00:01:55 Eric shows the root structure, and explains how we wrap and prep the bare roots for shipping - wrapped in sphagnum moss and then plastic.

00:02:58 Eric likes to work on batches so he can prepare different styles. He begins with a little root trim, to approx 2" long.

00:03:55 We pot them up in 3 1/2" container. The larger the container, the more vigorous plant you'll tend to have. Eric shares a tip for potting that allows for optimal root growth.

00:05:07 Informal upright style suggestion.

00:05:35 Planning on make a mame or shohin size bonsai? Wiring at the end of the first year is a good idea. Eric actually pots one example directly into a mame container and offers guidance on after-care.

00:07:24 Medium size tree? Wire! Then put into a larger container, like a 6" pond basket.
