This is the Gap Rd/Station St level crossing in Sunbury, on the Sunbury Railway line, with footage I took in October 2019, June 2020 and August 2021. This crossing is on the Victorian government's list of level crossings to be removed. It is currently in the early works of being grade separated, and is expected to be removed by 2022. The design will be a road under rail option, to preserve the nearby heritage listed Sunbury Railway Station.

This crossing has:

- Two General Signals E-Bells. Both bells are programmed to sound continuously until the boom gates rise

- Westinghouse cross-arms

- Marked Westinghouse lights

- Four Safetran boom gate mechanisms with unmarked bases, two for each lane of traffic

This crossing is situated in the heart of Sunbury, and essentially divides the community in two. It gets a lot of train traffic (Metro trains, V/Line trains to Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill and freight services), so boom gates can be down for 26% of the morning peak, with up to 24 trains passing through during these times.

Furthermore, Gap Rd was upgraded from two lanes to four in 2009 to enhance traffic flow in the area. However, the crossing wasn't removed. This was most likely to save costs, but we can also consider the fact that at that time the Metro network had not been extended beyond Watergardens Station so less trains passed through the crossing, making it less of a traffic issue and thus less of a priority for removal. These days it's a different story. At the time, the crossing was rated the 186th most dangerous level crossing in Victoria, according to the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model. However, as this list was compiled before the crossing was upgraded and the electrified network extended, we can consider this crossing as a lot more busy, dangerous and congesting than previously
