Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council also one known for a short period of time Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council was a semi-autonomous body that looked after the administration of the hills of Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal in India.

Gorkha National Liberation Front or GNLF is a political party formed in 1980 by Subhash Ghisingh with the objective of demanding a Gorkhaland state within India. During the 1980s the GNFL led an intensive and often violent campaign for the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state in Nepali speaking areas of northern Wes Bengal. The movement reached its peak during 1985 - 1986. On 22 August 1988 the GNLF, under Subhash Ghising signed the Darjeeling Hill Accord which created the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in exchange for the GNLF giving up his demand for Gorkhaland.

Subhash Ghisingh speaks about the movement, he says, " Bengal Government don't want to interrupt our movement and the government should understand the appropriate meaning of autonomous"

In 1986 the agitation processed state of Gorkhaland was launched by the GNLF, few political observers could project the movement which sustain for so long or that in the subsequent two years it would create a havoc in Darjeeling hill areas. Subhash Ghising's followers claimed that they were ostensibly in search of an identity for the Indian Gorkha but most analysts were convinced that beneath this process of the Identity was actually resentment at the economic neglect of the Darjeeling hills and a desire to manage their own affairs.

Jyoti Basu, Chief Minister of West Bengal, speaks about GNFL, he says, " I am very happy that at last, we could come to an agreement and everything has been worked out now we are waiting to be Hill Council to be constituted after the elections are over and we are very serious about implementing it because I said earlier that it not only a problem of West Bengal it is a problem of whole India as I look at it therefore with all earnestness we have to see that it is implemented.
