Cristiano Ronaldo had 23 shots at Euro 2024. This was the highest of any player at the end of the quarterfinals stage. But, he still did not score in the tournament, even missing a penalty against Slovenia in the round of 16.
His numbers for Portugal since the disastrous 2022 World Cup had been good. But, many of his goals came against significantly weaker teams. And, his club form in Saudi Arabia is no longer a reliable metric given the vast difference in quality in the league compared with European leagues.
Despite this, he was untouchable for Portugal during the Euros campaign. The 39-year-old was never rested or substituted, even when the team was crying out for a different dynamic in attack. He also kept on shooting from almost all of Portugal's free-kicks, even from absurd angles.
It was evident that the blind faith in Ronaldo cost Portugal. But, is he to blame for it? Is it time for the all-time great to hang up his boots. Or, can he still have a future with the national team?
