Transcript:

At week 31, your baby is weighing in at an impressive 3-plus pounds, but still has 3 to 5 more to gain before delivery. And at 16 inches long, give or take a couple, because fetuses at this age come in all sizes, your little one, now about the size of a sweet coconut, is quickly approaching birth length, which will likely range from about 18 to 21 inches.

Baby's eyes can now detect dim shapes and light with fully functioning pupils that constrict and dilate. Also developing at a rapid clip these days are your baby's brain connections. Trillions of them must be made before birth and your little Einstein is already putting those connections to good use, processing information, tracking light and perceiving signals from all five senses.

Your brainy baby is also a sleepy one, putting in longer stretches of snooze time, specifically REM sleep, which is probably why you're noticing more defined patterns of awake and kicking, and sleeping and still times from your little one.

As for your sleep, Mom, call it your body's way of getting acclimated to the sleep-deprived newborn nights ahead or nature's warped sense of humor, but most moms have trouble catching Zzzs by now. You can thank leg cramps, postnasal drip, heartburn, overheating, frequent trips to pee, vivid dreams that keep waking you up or simply struggling to get comfortable with a watermelon around your middle, or maybe all of the above. Try a warm bath or some hot milk, but don't sweat it. If you're consistently clocking less than six hours a night though, mention it to your provider at your next checkup. After all, Mama needs her rest too.
