"Jai-Alai frontons make natural concert venues. I didn't go to this show, but I've been to the venue. I used to travel to Florida a lot when I was younger and one time I visited Miami Jai-alai with my parents. I noticed that the fronton is basically a large auditorium with a huge stage, caged in at the front. My first impression of the place was that any band could take it over when the Jai-alai players were off. The auditorium was a perfect venue for a concert. I know that Jimi Hendrix was scheduled to play here in July 1970 but I am not sure that the gig actually took place. Iron Butterfly also was booked a few months later. I am not surprised to learn that the Dead set up shop here for some shows in '74. I wonder how many recent concerts were booked at frontons. They are definitely good venues."

"I went to this concert and it was terrific! The Jai-Alai Fronton was a great place to see the Dead perform, sat in the 3rd row center stage and I think the tickets were about $20.00*. The Miami Jai-Alai Fronton had great acoustics and I was hooked on the band forever!"

[*The Dead maintained average ticket prices around $5 to $7 through 1974. -Johnny]

Both the Audience and the Soundboard are available from The Owen Brothers Vault.

This was a nice SBD recording with only minor issues. Most tunings were cut. These were patched from the AUD source where available. A light Continuous Noise filter was used to minimize tape hiss. The sound was a bit flat so equalization was used to bring up the top and bottom ends a bit. Other specific issues corrected: The old SBD patch in Playin' was cleaned up and adjusted to better match the rest. Mix was bad on Promised Land on both SBD and AUD - couldn't fix that! All AUD patches were matched up as well as possible through EQ, Noise reduction and gain adjustments. Misc. loud handclaps, pops and other anomalies were corrected. All editing done with Diamond Cut DC6 software.
