šSirvomu: #TheMythicalTaleofaGiantEagle.
The Karbis have their version of mythical tales based on the Gaint Eagles popularly known as āSirvomuā. The tale goes as-
Once there a village called āRongmarthu-Rongmarleā and a boy, named Sir Tokbi (Pronounced āShirā) lives there. From his early childhood, he had been brave, courageous and strong. He has a hard-working and caring father and mother, Jor Tokbi and Kave Ingtipi; Two elder brothers, Lumjong Tokbi and Sar-et Tokbi, and one sister, Kare Tokbipi.
Because of drought, after many years, Sir Tokbi left the āRongmarthu-Rongmarleā village with his fellow villagers and established another village at Amseng near Amtereng. Near Amseng there a river called Karbi Langpi, and next to Karbi Langpi there is Cheleng Athepai. A giant pair of eagles live in this Cheleng Athepai. This giant pair of eagles used to take away pigs, goats, calves, and even children to feed their young ones.
One day Sir Tokbi and his elder brother Lumjong prepared to go to the jhum field; the son of his elder brother insisted on joining them as well. After necessary preparation, they moved to the jhum field; there, Sir Tokbi was busy clearing the jhum field, while his elder brother was busy firing the cleared shrubs.
Around that moment the giant eagle came down and took away the son of his elder brother. Sir tried to save his brotherās son, but the eagle was fast enough to take his brotherās son. Not only the child of Sir Tokbiās brother but also the eagle had taken so many village children along with other reared animals.
The villagers are afraid to get out of the house because of the eagleās terror and have decided to shift from Amseng to another place. Sir Tokbi, however, denied the idea of shifting the village. He asked his fellow villagers not to fear the giant eagle, but also requested them to stay here in Amseng. Sir Tokbi also told his villagers that he was ready to fight the giant eagle to protect his villagers from the terror of the giant eagle.
Sir Tokbi ordered the villagers to prepare Nok (Sword) and Chonk (Shield) for him. Therefore, the villagers prepared a shield made of a tree called āReng-Reng-athengpiā, and a sword according to his wish.
Cheleng athepai is a very sloping hill and itās a very challenging task going there. Not only the hills are high, but theyāre full of slippery stones and rocks. Itās a horror to have a foot on it. If by chance, it slips, then one is sure to fall below one hundred to thousand meters down.
Owing to love for his people and eager to free his people from the fear of the giant eagle. Sir Tokbi risked his life and started climbing the Chelang athepai. Sir Tokbi with the help of Chinthong and Langpi Arnam (God), reached in front of the cave, where the giant pair of eagles nests.
He had reached the cave just before the return of the eagle. So, he waited for the eagle, hiding somewhere on the rocks for their return. On return of the eagle, he closed the cave with his big shield. The eagle unexpectedly scares and tries to get out of the cave, but they couldnāt get out of the cave. So, the eagle had barely started to strike the shield with their claws and beaks.
The hits were so hard that the shields were starting to crack it. He immediately thought of an idea after seeing his cracking shield and shifted his shield to provide a few gaps between the shield and the cave. Since the eagle struggled to get out of the cave, by seeing the gaps, their heads came out of the small gaps made by Sir Tokbi. He took his sword by seeing the chance to kill the eagle and cut off the female eagleās head.
Immediately, after hacking the female eagleās head; the male eagle came out of the cave by one blow, by smashing the shield. The male eagle barely fought with Sir Tokbi after coming out of the cave. But Sir succeeded in cutting his left wings and the eagle flew away to save his life.
Sir entered the cave after winning his fight from the eagle and killed the eagleās young ones. He finds skulls and bones of various animals and children in the caves. He also found the clothes filled with bloodstains of his elder brotherās son as well as the clothes of other children. Sir Tokbi collects all the clothes and returns to his village. Upon reaching the village, Sir was welcomed by his fellow villagers with joy and celebration.
After the killing of a giant eagle, the people of Amseng were filled with joy and celebration and lived happily forever. And, from that day on Sir Tokbi is known as āSirvomuā for killing the giant Vomu (eagle).
