Architecture After Independence: Concepts and Conversations over 75 Years

This talk traces several themes in the evolution of Indian architecture in the post-independence period. It attempts to unravel the concerns and challenges that shaped the attitudes of Indian architects as they participated in creating the building culture for the newly formed nation state in the fifties and sixties. It maps the narratives of Indian architecture as it unfolds in the following decades bringing the discussion to the present, where it speculates about its future trajectory.

Smita Dalvi holds a PhD in Design from IIT-Bombay, and teaches architecture and aesthetics in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Her research areas are architecture as social history, urban heritage, and film studies. Her area of special interest is Indo-Islamic Art and Aesthetics. She has delivered several short courses and guest lectures on this subject in India and abroad. She is the co-author of Panvel: Great City, Fading Heritage (2020), and the editor of Celebrating India in 75 Buildings (2023). This recent publication commemorates 75 years of India’s independence through a selection of 75 significant buildings from 1947-2022.
