Is the CAGED system truly "the key to unlocking the fretboard" like many YouTube ads suggest? Can memorizing one shape have you playing like Hendrix or John Mayer?

Memorizing shapes is a subject we have to be a little careful about. Applying musical ideas requires you to be a patient listener. Systems like CAGED can sometimes help us progress quickly, but eventually have us stuck playing at the same level.

How do we avoid this? This problem does not mean we can't or shouldn't use the CAGED idea to improve our playing or help us find where we are on the fretboard. Let's learn CAGED a new way and enjoy playing guitar more!
