The UNESCO World Heritage sites of Wismar and Stralsund were important trading cities in the Hanseatic League of northern Germany during the medieval period and the middle ages. We were only able to visit Wismar, but were very impressed with the neat town square, beautiful buildings, and the enormous ruins of two churches, at one time amongst the largest brick churches in the world. Unfortunately both were heavily damaged in Allied air raids of World War II, and only one was rebuilt.
