Surgeon highlights causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of liver abscess. Untreated liver abscesses are fatal. Pus in the liver is usually caused by bacteria which may travel to the liver through blood stream or through direct spread. They cause fever, chills, pain, lethargy, loss of appetite and at times jaundice. Scans and blood tests are necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Appropriate antibiotics are given for at least six weeks and at times drainage of pus is required.
