Learning the characteristics of new materials is always fun and enjoyable here in the shop! Today we will dive into fossilized woolly mammoth teeth and also ancient bog oak. Both of these materials have interesting characteristics that I think will compliment each other. I learned a lot here wanted to lesson the learning curve for you with this video! The fossilized woolly mammoth tooth that I have came from Siberia and has been stabilized and casted in a black resin. Often times the teeth are casted to fill in any small voids that happened over the time of decay before becoming fossilized. Some varieties can be packed with color natural depending on what types of minerals migrate into the tooth during fossilization, although many are dyed in the stabilizing process also creating some wild colors. I believe the piece that we are working with is of natural variety. The ancient bog oak is also really interesting! the oaks fell into a peat bog hundreds if not thousands of years ago. The wood generally takes on a brown to black color from the tannins in the acid rich water. Bog wood is the early stages in the fossilization of wood. Bog wood can be very expensive, another variety that I have had the pleasure of working with is ancient kauri. Beware of scammers dying oak black and calling it bog oak. Use a trusted and widely known source for this type of wood if you choose to buy it! I hope you enjoy this episode in the handle material showdown series and if you did please go check out the playlist for the handle material showdown to learn more about other materials.
