Hello everyone and welcome to my new book review. This book was one that came recommended to me and admittedly, I had to wait for some time to borrow it from my local library because of its popularity.

First things first, I have not read any of Kuang's previous works. Secondly, it had a lot of themes such as envy, revenge, social media toxicity, plagiarism and cultural appropriation. There's a lot here to unpack and would make a great Book Club book if you're looking for one to read in your own clubs.

I picked out a few things as life lessons that made me curious and chatted about them in the context of my own experience and background. Of course, that means it's simply opinion.

The book is a satire that give us a behind the scenes look into the publishing industry and I love the 'meta' approach of how Kuang has created odious characters who then change the story to write a book to explain the unethical behaviours. One wonders if Yellowface was actually the protagonist's June Hayward's final result to explaining what had happened. You'll just have to read the book to understand what I'm talking about.

This book also made me think about cultural appropriation and when is it inappropriate? Is it? In all cases or some? This book is going to be a minefield of more questions than answers.

If anything, I think I came out of this with an understanding that as a reader, it's up to me to make the choice in what I read. I'd hate for us to be living in a world where you write only what the public deem your culture and background to be about. I'd love writers to be imaginative, to give voice to and to create the stories.
