GERMANY: Tornado, heavy rain, thunderstorm! "Explicit warning" Meteorologist now sounds the alarm

The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of severe storms for North Rhine-Westphalia until Wednesday night. According to the DWD, thunderstorms are moving in from the west. Meteorologists are expecting hail, heavy gusts of wind and heavy rain. Isolated hurricane-force gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

A low pressure zone stretches from Scandinavia and the North Sea to southwestern Europe, explained the DWD. It is directing warm and very humid air to North Rhine-Westphalia. "We have an air mass with a high potential for severe weather," said a meteorologist from the DWD. But it is still unclear where exactly the whole thing will pass.

In view of the forecasts, the city of Düsseldorf had already announced on Monday that it would keep its fan zones closed for the European Football Championship on Tuesday. Public viewing in Dortmund and other cities was also canceled.

The city of Cologne warned residents not to spend time outdoors. The zoo in Dortmund stopped opening its doors to visitors and the wildlife park in Düsseldorf closed at 12 noon.

The fan zones at the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag in Berlin will now also be closed due to an expected storm. Due to the official storm warning from the German Weather Service (DWD), visitors will be directed off the site by 4 p.m., the organizer Kulturprojekte Berlin announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The DWD is expecting heavy thunderstorms in Berlin this evening and overnight, as well as locally heavy gusts of wind, occasional large hail and sometimes heavy rain. "The safety of visitors to the fan zones is our top priority. We are therefore keeping the fan zones closed today and asking everyone to stay safe at home," said Moritz van Dülmen, managing director of Kulturprojekte. Both fan zones will be ready again from 2 p.m. (tomorrow) Wednesday and especially for the Germany vs. Hungary match from 6 p.m.

No broadcast of a European Championship match was planned for Tuesday in the fan zone at the Brandenburg Gate, but all European Championship matches will be broadcast at the Reichstag.
